"Preening"

A rare close-up of the gloriously coloured Kingfisher preening. This painting was one that caused me to 'up my game' as an artist - tackling something so intricate and detailed, whilst also having this beautiful bird feel truly alive on the paper.

Did you know that whilst the orange feathers of the kingfisher are coloured by tiny granules of pigment, the beautiful blues and turquoises we see are actually a kind of mirage created by light shining on the unique structural composition of these feathers and producing colour by 'incident light'? I find this rather amazing!

Original watercolour infused with flower essences on Fabriano 300gsm cold press paper.

Size of piece: 6.75 x 9.5"
