Our native seals are such curious, intelligent creatures. Here, in their element, blending into the land and sea around them, I wanted to evoke and celebrate their mystery and their beauty.
 
I started this painting just before a camping trip on the west coast of Scotland. Each night, we went to sleep to the sound of the seals singing their hauntingly beautiful song along the shore not far from us.
 
On one of the days, we walked along a huge deserted beach where we could see a cluster of rocks in the middle of the estuary, not far from us. As we drew nearer, we realised that the rocks were moving - and that they were very tuneful! It was a group of seals lounging on the sands. We were captivated!
 
When I returned, the painting seemed to paint itself, freshly inspired by this contact with these beautiful creatures.
 
Watercolour infused with flower essences on fabriano 300gsm paper.
