This painting came in on a quiet tide of its own mystery!
Two evenings before I completed it, when the painting was still in progress, my husband and I were out for an evening bikeride. It was lovely to pedal through the normally busy Lake District at a time when everything was quiet and still, and there were few cars or people around.
As we were heading home through a secluded stretch of woodland, we startled a tawny owl who also startled us: it suddenly took off from a tree right next to my husband as he was cycling past! It seemed to appear from beside his shoulder.
It was soundless; our exclamations were not!
